Pie Day!

This past wednesday Operation Peace students celebrated pie day, where they don't eat pies but throw them! Students are part of two teams that compete against each other for points they earn for working well during homework time. At the end of the month, whichever team wins gets to pie two people in the face. This month was full of surprise when the losing team volunteered to be pie'd themselves! All in all it was a day full of messiness and fun!

Fenway Church Sends Interns

Over the next six weeks Fenway Church (fenwaychurch.org) is training four new interns who have given their time to the full-time, unpaid position of the Discipleship Training Project. Their purpose is to devote themselves to the Fenway area by establishing partnerships and relationships with the community. With that mindset, they have found their way to Operation P.E.A.C.E. Boston.

Three of the four interns (the fourth will be volunteering his time in Brighton) will be spending Tuesday and Thursday afternoons here at Operation P.E.A.C.E. volunteering by helping in the already existing programs and reaching out to the surrounding community. They will be helping during open access hours to provide help with basic computer instruction and volunteering with the After School students. Other tasks they will be doing include researching grants for Operation P.E.A.C.E., organizing events and more.

Intern Alexis Cupp is very happy to join Operation P.E.A.C.E. and loves helping people in the computer lab and working with the kids during the after school program. Brennan Cooke is especially excited to reach out to the community by raising awareness of what goes on at Operation P.E.A.C.E. and helping them market to local businesses. Kelsey Rae enjoys the close community of the people who work here as well as those who come in. She looks forward to getting to know the people here because sometimes it is challenging in the city.

Operation P.E.A.C.E. Supports Affordable Housing in the Fenway

Despite a cold and snowy afternoon, many Fenway residents and community leaders rallied in support of maintaining affordable housing in the area. With the Burbank Apartment Tenants at risk of losing their 173 subsidized apartments, many locals marched touting signs and organizing chants in attempt to save their affordable homes. Nearly 10% of all affordable housing in the Fenway is represented by the Burbank Tenants who face losing their apartments. Boston City Councilors Ayanna Pressley and Michael Ross spoke in support of preserving the subsidized apartments in the Fenway. Pressley stated that if anything, "with these economic times we are in need of more affordable homes, not less." Among the community organizations and leaders advocating their support at the rally were the Peterborough Senior Center and Operation P.E.A.C.E. representative Carlo Lookner who displayed a sign that was designed by P.E.A.C.E.'s youth center staff and students.

Intermediate ESL Through the Life of Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire was born to German immigrants. Through hard work and dedication, he became a world-renown dancer, actor, and inspired the world as a communicator of the English language. His voice has been preserved on film and continues to inspire audiences. Nearly 100 years after he first stepped on a stage, we can still remember Fred for his charm, charisma, and mastery of the English Language.

Join Operation P.E.A.C.E. for this exciting intermediate ESL class that will use Fred’s songs, films, and his autobiography to explore the English language, through Dance, the Arts, and American culture.

START DATE: Thursday, October 14-December 2 (For 8 weeks)

New Video Paves the way for PEACE

Videos Pave the way for Peace! We recently completed two new educational videos, one of which is a resource for parents, educators, other non-profits, and our global community. Entitled “Raising Peaceful Children in a Violent World,” the educational video emphasizes what we learned about teaching nonviolence to children.

The other is a “Peace Dove Video” that documents a community art project that taught our after school children to reclaim their community by taking a stand against violence on the streets of

Boston. The art project was a collaboration with Operation P.E.A.C.E., the Mayor’s office, and humanitarian artist Sidewalk Sam. We would like to give a big thank you to our volunteers:

Peter Bullis, Melita Little, Zayde Buti, and Scott Ness, who helped complete the videos. Both videos are now available on our website at www.OperationPeaceBoston.org.

My name is Jihong Lee. I am a student in Korea from Sookmyung Women’s University studying education and will be a high school teacher. I came to P.E.A.C.E. to improve my English and teaching skills. I am lucky because everyone is so kind and always so happy to learn here. Many are also from other countries, so they understand how difficult it is to learn English. They always cheer me up, which I always appreciate. I’ve learned the importance of making sure people always feel welcome here. This may seem very basic, but many people aren’t usually taught this in school. I am sure this experience will be very helpful to my career.

Grantwriting Workshop Paves Way to Recognize P.E.A.C.E. Efforts

Operation P.E.A.C.E. Executive Director, David Zermeno produced a grant-writing workshop this summer for two aspiring grant-writers to promote effective grant-writing to keep P.E.A.C.E. programs and efforts alive and thriving. The two promising grant-writers will use their training, talents, and passion for serving their community, to write creative, spirited and effective efforts to help support disadvantaged low income families with at-risk children, unemployed residents, new English speakers and senior citizens living in the Fenway area of Boston. “I feel more confident about my position, and eager to use my talents and leadership skills to serve society,” says Zayde Buti, one of the participants. “David’s encouragement and sincere interest in my well being also left me feeling great about my current artwork and future career endeavours!”

P.E.A.C.E. Receives $10,000 Grant from MassImpact

We would like to thank MassImpact and give special thanks to Thaddeus Miles for their generous award of $10,000 to sustain our “Year of Excellence” program to promote excellence in education for our low income families living in subsidized housing in the Fenway community. The grant is based on the idea that our low-income families deserve "excellence." The award also allows our organization to provide our community with the consistency of a highly qualified educator and role model, provided by supplementing the salary of Mallory Macdonald, our After School Youth Coordinator and respected staff member.

Mission Hill Neighborhood Trust Awards P.E.A.C.E. $5,000

We would like to thank the Mission Hill/Fenway Neighborhood Trust, a pillar of support for our community who awarded Operation PEACE a generous $5,000 grant for a “New Leaders Training Program” to bolster our Summer Academy, Community Open Access, and Grant-Writing efforts. As a result of the grant, P.E.A.C.E. has been able to take on experienced and talented interns as paid staff for the summer to strengthen and expand the scope of P.E.A.C.E.’s community education and computer programs for our entire community.

PEACE Gallery Celebrates Youth Art Exhibition

Our Peace Gallery proudly presents our latest art exhibition featuring the work of our After School youth. From the words of Pablo Picasso, "Every child is an artist" and our After School students are proving that with their exciting new exhibition. From the exploration of the ancient art of printmaking to the students' recognition of female role models in their own lives, the After School students have created inspiring artworks that display their creativity, self expression, communication, and cultural and social awareness skills.

ESL CLASSES A BIG SUCCESS!

My name is Jane Showalter, and I have been teaching the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Operation P.E.A.C.E. This season we had an unprecedented success with over 25 committed students. The beginner class worked on greetings, feelings, communication, and the weather. The intermediate class concluded by writing the stories of their fascinating lives.

I have learned so much from teaching my students, and I am thankful for their dedication. It has been such a privilege to serve so many residents with such diverse backgrounds living in the Fenway community. I treasure the time I’ve had with such devoted learners who I now consider my friends.

Kids Prepared for Success!

Our after school staff prepared our children to excel in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), an important scholastic proficiency and performance exam. To keep students focused on success, our lessons were creative and interesting. Our math worksheets were created using each student’s name, and candies and other tools to help students use visualization to solve word problems. This not only helped kids focus, but they also enjoyed tasting their rewards.

Our writing lessons taught the importance of using logic to write opening and closing sentences. Students learned to use outlines to complete stories about topics they chose on book characters, famous women, and the origins of local and national holidays. It has been rewarding to use creativity to see our students improve their skills and be prepared for success.

Kaplan International School increases Interns at P.E.A.C.E.

"My name is JiHwan Kim. I am a political science student from Yeungnam University in Daegu, South Korea. I came to Boston to study English at the Kaplan International School and learn about U.S culture.

My teaching internship at Operation P.E.A.C.E. is a great opportunity to practice my English skills teaching computer skills to low-income residents and be of service in Boston. In the beginning I was very nervous meeting and speaking with Americans. But America has many kinds of very interesting people. Every day at Operation P.E.A.C.E. I meet people from different backgrounds and cultures and gain more confidence.

My internship training also taught me that it’s okay to make mistakes when working with people from all walks of life. Senior citizens are particularly kind to me, and I am fascinated to view world history from their life perspectives.

After School Kids Learn about Peacemaking in 2010

Last year our after school students chose many topics they wanted to learn about. So, after helping our children with their homework in reading, writing and arithmetic, we offered lessons on homelessness, animal safety, sea life, flowers, how candy is made, and government. We also had our weekly lessons on self awareness for respect of self and others. To instill these peaceful behaviors, our kids also learned to improve their self image though body language. We made learning fun by playing a regular game of ‘feelings charades,’ whereby students acted out different emotions and learned about communication, caring for others, and conflict resolution. This year, students will continue learning to respect other cultures, religions, and the importance of making a difference every day as peacemakers.

My name is Jane Showalter, and I have served as the beginning and intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor for Operation P.E.A.C.E. during the Fall 2009 session. This has been a wonderful opportunity to meet and work with residents from the Fenway community.

My goal is to help students become more skilled, confident English speakers by discussing grammar and vocabulary concepts using topics of interest to students. We have had a wonderful series of classes so far, and I look forward to continuing the winter session.

Art Exhibit Inspires Women Against Domestic Violence

In March, a survivor of domestic violence will be presenting an art exhibit at P.E.A.C.E. to inspire other women in our community.

“I have learned great lessons from walking through the doors of freedom to escape domestic abuse,” she says. “I was determined to be independent and live happily in a safe environment. I've now embraced the camera as a way to celebrate my creativity, spirit, and new vision for life. When I gathered all my strength and decided to love and respect myself, it brought a future where I now walk with self confidence, wisdom, peace, and true inner happiness.”

“My Exhibit focuses on many flowers in bloom because they symbolize new life beginnings and show that no one has the right to keep our inner beauty from blossoming as women. Our feminine beauty possesses great power when we come out into the light. My exhibit seeks to empower women to live happily expressing their full potential.” Art Reception: March 10 at 5:30PM.

MassImpact Awards P.E.A.C.E. $10,000 for “Excellence”

Mass Impact recently awarded Operation P.E.A.C.E. a $10,000 grant to provide another “Year of Excellence” The grant seeks to provide P.E.A.C.E. with staff consistency for an entire year by raising the salary of staff member Mallory Macdonald, who helps run our Open Access Hours and leads our After School program. The grant proposal was written to ensure that our after school children receive an entire year with a consistent and highly trained educator who has been an inspiring role model in their lives. In return, Peace staff will produce a nonviolence video for other nonprofits. Special thanks to Thaddeus Miles, Director of Public Safety, MassHousing, and Laura O’Regan for her grantwriting assistance.

As Summer Academy Ends, After School Session Begins

The P.E.A.C.E. Summer Academy exposed our children to many education opportunities all summer long, including field trips to: The Children’s Museum, The Harvard Museum of Natural History, The Swan Boats, and the Bunker Hill Monument. Educational activities and social studies lessons educated our children about other continents, cultures, and world peace. The children spent the summer using these activities to strengthen their skills in reading, writing, math, and social skills. As the Summer Academy ends, the P.E.A.C.E. Senior uses P.E.A.C.E. for Community Advocacy

After learning how to use a computer at Operation P.E.A.C.E., Gil Loo has been using his computer skills for community advocacy. He has been working an email advertising campaign to “Save the 55 Bus”. He took a photograph then created an advertisement at P.E.A.C.E.. His advertisement is now being used by the Fenway Community Development Corporation in its efforts to save the this valuable resource for senior citizens and all Fenway residents. Operation P.E.A.C.E. launches its Summer Youth Academy July 6, which runs Monday-Friday, 9-5PM through August 21, 2009. Our qualified staff will teach reading, writing, and math to Fenway children enrolled in K2 through 5th grade. Children will also learn the importance of responsibility, as well as other school subjects centered around themes of multiculturalism. New Class for Seniors

Operation PEACE recently completed an eight-week beginners computer class for seniors in collaboration with the Peterborough Senior Center. Taught by Mallory Macdonald, the class began on May 5 and ran until June 23rd. The class was such a success that Operation P.E.A.C.E. will be offering another session in the fall.

P.E.A.C.E. Welcomes New Summer Youth Academy Coordinator

Operation P.E.A.C.E. is proud to welcome Renee Deuplisea, our new Assistant Youth Coordinator, a certified preschool teacher and a senior at Wheelock College. In December, she will be graduating with a Bachelors of Science with a concentration in human development and psychology.

During our summer academy, she will be teaching social studies to our children. Renee is especially excited to be teaching a unit on Native Americans, as she just spent a week living and working on an Indian Reservation housing with the Lakota tribe. She is looking forward to being able to teach about the Lakota culture as well including the popular phrase, mitakuye oyasin, translating to “we are all related.”

Free Art Class: “Gardens in Paintings from Rome to Monet”

In collaboration with the Peterborough Senior Center and Operation P.E.A.C.E., local art

teacher Jan Peretz will be giving an art class on “Gardens in Painting from Rome to Monet.” The class will allow attendees to enjoy exquisite books on fine art from the Boston Atheneum that include gardens in paintings through the ages of western history.

The class will begin with paintings representing Livia’s Garden in ancient Rome and conclude with Claude Monet’s painting of his famous Giverny Gardens. Peace Gallery Exhibits “Picasso’s Paris”

Our current exhibit celebrates the life of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso during his early life in Paris with lithographs, photographs, and original vintage posters from his Paris exhibitions. The exhibit includes wooden sculptures reminiscent of his African influence and a collection of books on Picasso for all walks of life.

Leaders of Peace

Our Intermediate ESL Class will study “Leaders of Peace” who have made important contributions to World Peace and Civil Rights. We thank intern Tyler Bugden, who wrote the curriculum for P.E.A.C.E.. ESL instructor Liz Zelle will help students improve reading, writing, and conversational skills. Both the Beginning and Intermediate ESL classes will be held on Tuesday nights starting March 24th at the Peterborough Senior Center. The Beginning class will be held from 5-6PM. The Intermediate class will be held from 6:30-7:30PM and will study the works of: Desmond Tutu, Mohatma Ghanda, Cesar Chavez, musician Bob Marley, Lech Walesa, Eleanor Roosevelt and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Students will study his “I Have A Dream” speech from the monumental March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Operation P.E.A.C.E. welcomes Diane Keeney (right), our new intern and computer instructor for the Russian community. Diane is a student at Boston University. She teaches the basic computer class in Russian with Oleg Volya (left), our Russian translator, who is also a Peterborough Housing resident. Students will have fun creating personal biographies using Microsoft Word, Photoshop, and the Internet.

This beginning computer class will be held on Wednesday mornings from 10-12PM. Operation P.E.A.C.E. invites Russian speakers who would like more advanced computer training to come during regular open access hours on Wednesdays from 12-2PM when. A Russian-speaking tutor is available.

Best Buy Grant helps Kids design T-shirts to fundraise for P.E.A.C.E.

We thank Best Buy for sponsoring our “Rhythm of Teamwork” project with a $7,500 grant for kids to use arts and technology to learn teamwork. With the guidance of Stephanie Milewski, After School Arts Specialist, our children successfully learned teamwork by designing a new T-shirt for Operation P.E.A.C.E. Our children proudly promoted their design during their recent “Rhythm of Teamwork” musical performance for family and friends. The children are now selling their new T-shirts for only $10 each.
